Buying a third-party legal AI product for a defined task may look simpler financially and operationally, and often will be. Partners should still seriously explore building an internal AI capability rather than allowing purchased products to become the firm's entire AI strategy.
The "more AI" phase is ending. For the past two years, professional firms have been buying, piloting, and mandating AI tools at a pace that’s outrun user-adoption capability. As a result, firms are investing at a high rate, with disappointing returns on investment. The cost is catching up, and the questions are getting harder. The firms pulling ahead aren't just buying more AI — they're making sure they’re buying the right AI for the right reasons.

The U.S. judiciary suffers from a trust issue among the general public, largely due to its fragmented, unusable, costly, and difficult-to-access data. That is the argument put worth in this week's "Student Voices" blog, which suggests that improving judicial data and accessibility to it will improve transparency, public engagement in the courts, and collaboration and innovation among organizations.

In Normal Accidents (1984), the sociologist Charles Perrow argued that accidents are inevitable in complex, tightly coupled systems. Slowing AI development, as Anthropic’s chief executive has proposed, may buy time, but it cannot remove the need for a techno-legal infrastructure that makes a stop possible and prepares for its failure. Lawmakers should use that time to build it, before the next AI crisis.
